3. The word conservation literally means to save something. It may be water, energy, soil or some species of animals and plants. In terms of conservation of water it means that we all should save rain water in the rivers ponds, wells and in the fields to raise the ground water level of the earth. At the same time we should use water with economy. When the rain water percolates down into the earth, it no longer remains thirsty.

We are living in a very challenging era. Ruthless cutting of trees and destruction of forests have resulted in scanty rainfall. We see scarcity of water growing almost everywhere which is adversely affecting the cultivation of crops. How can we be happy with thirsty soil ?

If the fields do not have plenty of water it affects the production of food grain and the country faces shortage of food. Our brothers and sisters who live in villages start migrating to the cities and towns in Foot search of work. The cities fail to accommodate them and there arise many social and economic problems.

4. You can realize that ours is the new generation which has to play a very important role in the future. It is our duty to remain awake and share the responsibility to find solution to the problem of scarcity of water. The Government has motivated all the sections of the society to come forward to save each and every drop of water. We receive water through rainfall.

This is very unfortunate that most of the water flows down the rivers and reaches the sea, thus it remains unused. We are a witness to the emptied and dried up rivers, ponds, wells and tube wells. We should not sit silent. Under water conservation programme we are trying to harvest rain water at different levels. The farmers will store water in their fields by building Medha Bandh around their fields.

The Editor,

15th Oct., 20.

Sir,
I would like to draw your attention to the cutting of trees prevailing in our area. As we all know that trees are valuable to us. Trees help to bring rain, keep the air clean, we get fruits from them. Trees help to beautify our surroundings. Hence, cutting of trees shall be a thrust to the environment. If the trees are cut then ecology will be disturbed. The floods shall occur and destroy the crops after rains. So the concerned authorities should take immediate steps to stop the cutting. Strick action should be taken against them.

Thanking you,
Yours Truly
Anurag

Trees: Our Saviours Summary, Pronunciation & Translation

1. The forests of the Himalayan region have played an important role in the life of the people of Uttarakhand. 2. During the 1970’s, however deforestation began. Trees were cut down. As a result, there was nothing to hold the soil. The rushing rain water carried away not only the soil, but also huge rocks, causing landslides, filling up the rivers, leading to floods. Further owing to the forest trees being taken away, the people who depended on them for food and fuel, faced great difficulty. They had to walk longer distances to collect firewood for cooking, plants for food and medicines, and to graze their cattle.

Let’s Read

Read the passage carefully.

According to Indian mythology, King Sagar, an ancestor of Lord Ram decided to perform a hundred Ashwamedha Yagnas. He completed ninetynine Yagnas and it was the hundredth when the horse of the Yagna got stolen by Devraja Indra. A great search for the horse was made. Ultimately Indra left the horse in the ashram of Kapil Muni. It was found by the sones of King Sagar. They insulted the Muni, thinking that it was he who had brought the horse there. Kapil Muni rose from his deep meditation and his anger soon turned down the sons of Sagar into ashes.

King Sagar had one more son Anshuman from his second queen. After his father, King Anshuman decided to make the Ganga descend on earth and immerse in it the ashes of his brothers so that their souls could rest in heaven. He started great Tapa, (severe penance) for this. After his death, his son King Dilip did similar Tapa to please the Ganga but could not succeed. After king Dilip his King Bhagirath continued the Tapa. Thus it was the third generation undergoing penance to please the Ganga.

The fierce penance of King Bhagirath pleased the Ganga. She appeared before him, and, blessing him, asked who would bear her force and current. King Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva to come for his help. Lord Shiva caught the powerful current of the Ganga in the locks of hair on his head. He tied her too tight to come out Again Bhagirath prayed to him to release the holy current. When she was released, she violently flowed after the chariot of Bhagirath. On her way came the ashram of Janhu Muni, and it too was swept away in the strong current. The Muni got furious and drank the whole of its water and dried the river up. Once again King Bhagirath had to pray to the Muni, and he released the Ganga from his thigh. Thus she was called Janhavi, the daughter of Janhu Muni.

Onward she continued her journey to the Gangasagar and ultimately reached the ashes of the sons of King Sagar.
