On 11th Oct. the sailors recovered from the sea a table board, a carved stick and a branch of tree having fruit on it, floating by. It was a clear cut indication of the land. At 10 p.m., Columbus saw a dim light in the west. Two other sailors confirmed him. Rodrigo de Triana was the first person to catch sight of land at about 2 a m. on 12th of October, 1942. Columbus stepped on the level shores of the small island, carrying a flag of Spain in his hand. Other captains and crew members followed him.
