Dr. Rajendra Prasad, our late President, once said, “The country is marching forward on the road of progress in the leadership of Panditji.” He did a lot for the world. Gandhiji was a person who believed in the degnity of man and left us the legacy of Ahimsa, love and tolerance. He was the ‘Father of the Nation’ (Bapu) a great soul (Mahatma) and the gentle prophet of non-violent revolution all rolled into one. He dedicated himself to the pursuit of truth of our fellowmen and the healing of wounds of nation. Hence he was a leader of the world at large. He was shot dead on the evening of January 30, 1948 by Nathu Ram Godse.

Once the travellers were driving through the foothills of the Alps. Two small boys stopped them. They were selling wild strawberries on the outskirts of Verona. The driver asked the travellers not to buy fruits from them. They could buy fruits much better in Verona. The boys had tangled hair and dark earnest eyes with brown skin. The boys were brothers. Their names were Nicola and Jacopo.

The travellers came out of the hotel next morning. They saw the two boys again. They were cleaning shoes. Nicola told them that they did various jobs to earn a living. Sometimes they took the visitors through the town to show them the places of interest. Both the brothers proved very useful to the travellers. They did every work with great interest and competence.

The travellers saw the two brothers selling newspapers one night. Nicola was deadly tired. They were waiting for the arrival of the last bus. They could sell all their papers when it arrived. The narrator was highly impressed by their hard work. He asked them if they needed anything from him. Jacopo informed him that they used to go to the town of Poleta every Sunday. He wished that the narrator should take them there in his car. It was at a distance of 30 kilometres from there. The narrator agreed to drive them out himself.

The next afternoon they reached a tiny village. It was set high upon a hillock. The car stopped at a large red-roofed villa and both the brothers got down. They asked the narrator to go to the cafe and have a drink. They would return in an hour. The narrator followed them after a few minutes. He rang the bell. A trained nurse opened the door of the hospital. The narrator saw through a glass that the two little boys were talking eagerly to a girl in bed. Her resemblance with them indicated that she was their sister.

The nurse told, the narrator that Nicola, Jacopo and their sister Lucia belonged to a cultured family. Their father was killed in war. They suffered a lot in winter. The boys joined the Resistance Movement. They returned after the war was over and there was peace. They found that their sister was suffering from Tuberculosis of the spine. They brought her to that hospital an year ago. They have been making payments regularly. And they hoped that their sister will recover and walk and sing again. The narrator drove the boys back. He did not reveal to them that he had come to know about their pligjnt. But his heart was touched deeply by their devotion to a noble cause.

One was beautiful and smart while the other was inferior to her to look at. The catering staff came to take order for dinner. He was a bit older and also weak due to some problem. The beautiful lady called him very rudely and ordered for her dinner while the other lady addressed the man very softly and ordered for her dinner. After an hour, he brought their dinner.

While serving it he stumbled and the dinner fell over the gentle lady. She was very calm and she didn’t react to it and helped the man. But the beautiful lady got angry at this. She abused him and complained against him. When the manager came, the gentle lady simply said it was her own fault. The old man blessed her. My heart was touched and I was left full of respect for the lady.

भामा शाह : मैंने एक भी सोने का सिक्का नहीं रखा, न ही कोई भी ऐसी चीज़ जो मेरे विचार से मेरी सम्पत्ति में वृद्धि कर सकती थी। प्रिय स्वामी मेरे सबसे दयालु और महान स्वामी, मैं इस दिन के लिए जिया हूँ कि मैं एक बेहद शानदार ढंग से अन्तिम बार आपकी सेवा कर सकूँ। मेरे पास इतना धन है कि आपके सैनिकों के लिए बारह से पन्द्रह वर्षों तक भोजन व हथियारों की व्यवस्था हो सकती है और सिर्फ मुट्ठी भर वीर पुरुष नहीं बल्कि पूरे बीस हज़ार, तीस हज़ार हष्ट-पुष्ट राजपूत। कहिए कैसा होगा यह अकबर के लिए? हम बहुत ही जल्द उसे दिखा देंगे और उसके मुगलों को भी कि कैसे मेवाड़ के लोग वापसी करते हैं। वहाँ ऊपर पर्वत के किनारे हम एक मुगल डेरे के पास से गुज़रे।

भामा शाह : (खुशी से) सपना, मेरे राणा? देखिए, क्या यह सपना है? (घुड़सवारों के एक दल की ओर इशारा करते हुए जो कि बेहद सावधानी से डेरे की तरफ आ रहे थे।) हमने घोड़ों की झूलों को लपेट दिया था और घुड़सवार ऐसी वेशभूषा में थे मानो कफन में लिपटे मुर्दे। अपने डेरे से भटक कर आया हुआ कोई मुगल सैनिक का सामना यदि ऐसे दल से हो जाता तो वह यह सोच कर पागल हो जाता कि उसने राणा प्रताप के दल के भूत देखे हैं, क्योंकि वे यही मानते हैं कि आप इस रेतीले रेगिस्तान के पार जा चुके हैं, अपने सभी निष्ठावान राजपूत अनुयायियों के साथ आपके खूनी लाल झण्डे के पीछे।

प्रताप सिंह : यदि अच्छे दिन वापिस आते हैं और सिसोदिया लोग चितौड़ पर पुनः सूर्य (मेवाड़ राज्य का प्रतीक चिह्न) का राज्य स्थापित करते हैं तो आपके परिवार का और भी अधिक सम्मान किया जाएगा। मैं आपको मेवाड़ को बचाने वाले के रूप में नमन करता हूँ।

The other girls in her group also made faces to show their displeasure. What these girls did not know was that if anyone told Mamta she could not do a certain thing, she accepted it as a challenge and never rested till she had proved them wrong.

The day of the race downed. It turned out to be a close race. Towards the end Mamta caught up with the champion. Her eyes were fixed at the finishing line. Like Arjuna in the Mahabharata aiming at the fish’s eye, Mamta too could see nothing else. And in the end she did win, though by a couple of seconds only. It was so unexpected that there was a moment’s silence all around as she crossed the finishing line. Even the judges on the field were surprised that someone looking so frail and delicate could run so fast. There was a lot of excitement on the field before Mamta was announced the winner.

Finally, the inter-school basketball competition started. In all, ten teams were participating in the competition. Mamta’s school had never before even reached the semi-finals. So this year the girls were desperate to win.

Their team went up to the finals. Mamta had a big role in the team reaching the finals. Her shots never missed and being five feet six inches tall, she could easily pass the ball to whoever she wished to, and grab it easily when it was meant for someone else. With every game they won, her teammates respected her more than before. Without her, they would have found it very difficult to reach the finals.

In the finals, they were up against the city champions. The game finished with equal points for both the teams. So both the teams got three free shots each. The opponents were able to score only one shot out of three. From her team, Mamta was chosen to hook the ball. She had to score at least two baskets to win. All eyes were fixed on her.

Those words set her on fire again. This was her chance to show everyone how wrong they were. She made her shot, and it was a perfect basket. There was a loud applause from the audience. Both the teams were again equal.

But could she do it again? There was deafening silence in the field in anticipation of her shot. It was as if no one even dared to breathe. Mamta bent her legs, raised the ball into position, and at last took the shot. She felt tears streaming down her face as the ball looped through the basket and bounced on the ground. Their team had made history. They had been participating in the competition for long, but it was the first time that they had reached the finals and had won it too.
